In the center of Peace Memorial Park, the Cenotaph for the A-Bomb Victims (officially, Memorial Monument for Hiroshima, City of Peace) was unveiled by Hiroshima City in 1952. The Cenotaph for the A-bomb Victims in the shape of an ancient clay dwelling was designed to house the souls of those who perished due to the atomic bomb. The register of names of confirmed A-bomb victims is placed in the center of the stone coffin in the ancient house. The words inscribed on the front end of the stone coffin are a prayer for the peaceful repose of the A-bomb victims and a pledge never to repeat the evils of war and the use of nuclear weapons, thereby building a brighter future for human beings. The text says, "Please rest peacefully, for we will not repeat the evil."
The inscription is a pledge to the A-bomb victims on behalf of all the world's people to avoid the evils of nuclear weapons and war. Today, with the world leaning increasingly toward war, we should all renew the cenotaph pledge.
