Picture book read-aloud session in English by Coordinator for International Relations
On June 5, 2016, a picture book read-aloud session in English for children by Ms. Karlee Keyser, a Coordinator for International Relations, was held in the International Exchange Lounge on the 1st floor of International Conference Center Hiroshima.
Three readings were given. The first was a slow reading in English. In the next reading, the book was read again, this time mixing in some Japanese, to ensure that the story could be understood. The final reading was given once again only in English, slightly faster than the first time. This time, the keywords that appear repeatedly throughout the book were read out together by the children as well. The children appeared a little nervous to start with, but their voices gradually became louder, and by the end they responded very positively.
After the read-aloud session, there was a craft session where the children made masks of animal faces. There were explanations given about American elementary schools during the craft session.
In the end, the children all put on their masks, and played the role of the animals as they practiced the sounds the animals make in English.
The Coordinator for International Relations Ms. Karlee is a warm and cheerful person, and the children became very comfortable talking to her, making it a fun, lively session.
This was the first time that a picture book read-aloud session has been held. It was a good opportunity for the children to come into contact with English and foreign culture.
