Sister City and Friendship City Day Events

Citizens enjoy foreign cultures

Montreal Day
 On July 21, 2019, the Montreal Day commemorative event was held at Fukuya Department Store in front of Hiroshima Station.
 Visitors to the event first had a taste of maple water and maple rusks, an original product made by Minagaen, a social welfare facility in Hiroshima City. At the commemorative ceremony, there were speeches by the event organizers and a representative from the Japan office of the Government of the Province of Quebec, as well as a message from the Mayor of Montreal.

 Next was a presentation on life and culture in Montreal City, including a quiz, by Hiroshima Messengers Mr. Chikara Yamamoto and Ms. Tokuho Iimura, and a commemorative performance by jazz singer hisaka. Hisaka has released two albums in Canada, and has long held the number one popularity ranking in the high-resolution jazz genre in Japan, and there was loud applause when she sang.
 There was also a fun prize draw where participants could win maple syrup and other specialty goods, a panel display introducing Montreal and Canada, display and sale of specialty products, and more.
 There were around 250 visitors to the event, and they deepened their understanding of Montreal and Canada as they enjoyed the food and arts culture.
 
Volgograd Day
 A commemorative event for Volgograd Day was held on September 8, 2019.
 At the display section introducing Volgograd City, Russia, visitors viewed traditional Russian crafts, photos of Volgograd City landscapes, and displays on youth exchange activities between Hiroshima City and Volgograd City. At the food culture experience section, visitors tasted pelmeni, which are Russian-style dumplings, and black bread, as they enjoyed a piano performance by Ms. Kaduki Tanaka.
 At the commemorative ceremony in the hall, there were speeches by Mr. Tomiaki Kurokawa, the head of the executive committee, and Mr. Nobuyuki Koike, the deputy mayor of the City of Hiroshima. These were followed by a message from the mayor of Volgograd, which was read out in Russian by Mr. Andrei Krot, the Hiroshima Messenger who was an MC for the event. There was also a speech by the special guest, the Consul-General of Russia in Osaka.

 Next, the two Hiroshima Messengers gave a presentation on Volgograd City using photos and videos, and also spoke about Russia, on the topic of “A Heterogenous Country”.
 At the concert of Russian music, following on from the previous year two students from Elizabeth University of Music gave a performance of Russian music on flute and piano. This was followed by a chorus by the members of the Hiroshima Choir of various Russian songs. There was also a fun lottery where participants could win goods from Russia, and the venue was filled with an air of excitement.
 The weather on the day was fine and there were around 160 visitors to the event, enjoying exchange activities with our sister city Volgograd City.

-Event commemorating the 60th anniversary of the sister city relationship between Hiroshima City and Honolulu City-
Honolulu Day
 On November 5, 2019, the Honolulu Day commemorative event was held in the JMS Aster Plaza Hall.
 Marking the 60th anniversary of the sister city relationship between Hiroshima and Honolulu, a large-scale event was held, attended by Mr. Roy Amemiya, secretary of administration from Honolulu, and Ms. Celia Thompson, head of consular affairs at the United States Consulate-General in Osaka and Kobe.
 At the commemorative ceremony, there were speeches by the head of the executive committee Mr. Yamamoto and Hiroshima Mayor Matsui, followed by speeches by Mr. Amemiya and Ms. Thompson.
 Next, the Hiroshima Messengers Toru Moriwaki and Rumi Kimura gave a presentation, including an overview of Honolulu City, Hawaii, and explanations of the friendship visit to Honolulu to mark the 60th anniversary of the sister city relationship, and a presentation on Hawaiian language. The presentation was very popular with participants, for whom it was an opportunity to learn more about Honolulu, which has a history of exchange activities with Hiroshima City.

Joint performance by around 60 performers

 The Sister City Relationship 60th Anniversary Commemorative Concert started with performances by a Hawaiian band and hula dance group from Hiroshima. Next was a performance by Jeff Au Hoy, a steel guitar player based in Honolulu. The venue was filled with the tropical atmosphere of Hawaii, and the audience enjoyed themselves. Finally, there was a joint performance by around 60 performers, including Mr. Au Hoy, and the event closed with a fitting rousing finale.
 In the hall lobby was a display panel showing the 60-year background of the sister city relationship and immigration to Hawaii, looking back over the history of exchange activities between the two cities. At the section displaying and selling Hawaiian goods, many people were drawn to the colorful Hawaiian shirts and other products.
 There were around 400 hundred visitors, and they gained a deeper understanding of Honolulu and Hawaii as they enjoyed the event.
