Acceptance of UN Disarmament Fellows

On October 6 and 7, 2022, this Foundation hosted 24 young diplomats (Fellows) from 24 countries and regions, who are participating in the Programme of Fellowships on Disarmament, which is organized by the United Nations to train disarmament experts.
This program has been implemented by the United Nations since 1979, and this Foundation has accepted trainees every year since 1983. Approximately 1,000 trainees have received training in Hiroshima City to date.
During this training session, the participants listened to Mr. Takashi Koizumi, former Chairperson of the Hiroshima Peace Culture Foundation, explain the Foundation's efforts for nuclear abolition, and also listened to a lecture on the A-bomb experience. They also toured Peace Memorial Museum and Peace Memorial Park, and presented flowers to the Cenotaph for the Atomic Bomb Victims.
The group listened attentively to former Chairperson Koizumi's explanation of Mayors for Peace and its efforts to promote peace and a "culture of peace" and engaged in a lively discussion. In the A-bomb testimonial talk by Keiko Ogura, the participants asked many questions, and were talking with Ms. Ogura even after the session, showing their strong interest in the atomic bombing and the abolition of nuclear weapons.
In addition, the visit to Peace Memorial Museum and Peace Memorial Park brought the participants closer to the reality of the atomic bombing, and they presented flowers at the Cenotaph for the Atomic Bomb Victims to renew their commitment to peace.
The participants commented that they would like to apply what they learned in Hiroshima in their future work as diplomats, and that they renewed their determination to do their utmost for nuclear disarmament from now on. Through this training program, we were able to convey the reality of the atomic bombing to the trainees and share their thoughts about the A-bombed city.
