How did the American soldiers actually drop the atomic bomb? What method was used?

The United States made special modifications to a B-29 bomber, a large airplane that was originally designed to attack targets with conventional bombs.

The special B-29 was called the Enola Gay. It was operated by military personnel who had received special training preparing them to drop the bomb. The A-bomb exploded about 43 seconds after being dropped. In that amount of time, the plane was able to escape to a safety.
