The clothes of the victims were burned by the heat. Bloodstained and in tatters, the survivors fled the devastated city. On the day of the atomic bombing, about 350,000 people were exposed, and about 140,000 people were to die by the end of December 1945. Among the victims were many students who were mobilized to demolish buildings.
