Nakajima-shin-machi(now Nakajima-cho)

Isao Taniguchi (then, 13) was a first-year student at Second Hiroshima Prefectural Junior High School. He was exposed to the bomb at his building demolition work site in Nakajima-shin-machi. In the middle of the night of August 6, his father Junnosuke and his older brother Katashi (then, 16) searched through the dark and found him in an air-raid shelter near the Dobashi streetcar stop. He was with his friend Asahiko Nishimoto. Isao's face was so burned and swollen that they spoke to him over and over to confirm that it was him. They finally identified him only by his voice and the tatters that were left of Katashi's old jacket. On August 7 an air-raid warning sounded and the family fled toward the mountain carrying Isao. That evening, Isao muttered "It's coming closer," and died.
