A-bomb Memoirs Translated into 20 Languages
As the number of foreign tourists visiting Hiroshima increases, the number of foreign visitors to the Hiroshima National Peace Memorial Hall for the Atomic Bomb Victims has also increased rapidly. For this reason, a foreign-language section has been set up in the Library at the Memorial Hall. This is because we believe that reading the A-bomb memoirs in one's mother tongue strongly appeals to the emotions of people visiting from other countries, and is a good way of communicating the truth of the damage from the bombing.
With the wish of giving people from as many countries as possible a deeper understanding of the truth of the bombing, we started by translating the memoirs into ten languages in 2009, and by 2014 the memoirs could be read in 20 different languages. The memoirs are also available in the Search Engine for Archived Materials in the four languages of Japanese, English, Chinese and Korean. The number of memoirs that may be viewed in each language is still small, at only 6-9 memoirs for each language, but both the number of languages as well as the number of translations will be increased in the future.
The A-bomb memoirs include wishes for peace as well as descriptions of sad memories, including the painful thoughts of a mother who lost her two daughters in the bombing, the hellish scenes viewed in the city by a mobilized student who narrowly escaped death, a man who was severely injured in the bombing and suffered from the after-effects, and a mother who passed away from heavy injuries and who was more concerned about the safety of her children than herself.
