Completion of A-Bomb Paintings
—High school students depict A-bomb experiences in paintings—
From 2007, this Foundation has produced A-Bomb Paintings with the support of students in the Creative Expression Course at Hiroshima Municipal Motomachi Senior High School.
The students work together with A-bomb witnesses for this Foundation, and through the paintings communicate the situation at the time of the bombing by depicting the scenes recalled by the witnesses.
From 2016, eight witnesses and eighteen students worked on the paintings, completing a total of eighteen paintings in 2017.
The completion ceremony was held at the Motomachi Senior High School Exhibition Gallery on July 4. Seven witnesses attended, as well as the students who created the paintings and other students from the Creative Expression Course, and people from this Foundation and Motomachi Senior High School.
A student who painted innumerable corpses floating down a river said "At first I was worried that I wouldn't be able to express that horrific world in a painting. I repainted the color of the water a number of times so that I could faithfully express what the witness said. Through this painting, I learned that there was a reality that went beyond what I had ever imagined. From now on I want to do what I can for peace."
The completed A-Bomb Paintings will be used in the A-bomb testimonies of survivors, and will be lent out and provided as image data, to help people better understand the A-bomb experience, and to help pass on the reality of the damage from the bombing to later generations.
