Hiroshima Red Cross Hospital was one of the few medical institutions that escaped collapse and fires in Hiroshima City, which suffered such destructive damage when the bomb was dropped. For this reason, the hospital was inundated with wounded people immediately after the bombing. The doctors and nurses who survived worked day and night to help the wounded, even amidst broken facilities and equipment and dwindling supplies of medication and treatment materials.
This exhibition includes actual objects belonging to Hiroshima Red Cross Hospital & Atomic-bomb Survivors Hospital, such as chairs that show signs of the bomb's heat wave and hospital gowns that were worn by patients at the time. The exhibition also includes photographs and videos of patients lying down and receiving treatment, and paintings created by hibakusha of the wounded surging in front of the hospital and people dying as they waiting for treatment.
The exhibit from Hiroshima Red Cross Hospital titled "Wall with scars of glass shards" that was on display in the East Building prior to renovations has been moved to the Foyer. After the special exhibition is over it will be on display as part of the permanent exhibition.
