In line with the decision made at the 8th Mayors for Peace Japanese Member cities Meeting, on November 9, 2018, Hiroshima Mayor Kazumi Matsui (president of Mayors for Peace), Nagasaki
Mayor Tomihisa Taue (vice-president of Mayors for Peace), and Takayama City Civic Activities Department Manager Toru Takahara (filling in for Michihiro Kunishima, Mayor of Takayama City where the Meeting was held) visited the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and submitted the document addressed to Prime Minister Shinzo Abe requesting the promotion of initiatives for the abolition of nuclear weapons to Mr. Kiyoto Tsuji, the Parliamentary Vice-Minister for Foreign Affairs.
Mr. Tsuji, receiving the document, stated "The Japanese government shares the objective of Mayors for Peace to create a world free of nuclear weapons. We would like to work hard with full understanding of the Mayors for Peace approach. I am very encouraged by the two mayors leading the world on this. I appreciate your continued cooperation."
