Sister City and Friendship City Day Commemorative Events
Introducing sister and friendship cities to citizens
Hiroshima City has established sister and friendship city days for each of its six overseas sister and friendship cities, and holds commemorative events. The MCs of the events were the Hiroshima Messengers selected through public recruitment.
Daegu Day
From May 3 to 5, 2019, the Daegu Day commemorative event was held at the Hiroshima Flower Festival venue.
At the commemorative ceremony on the 3rd, the head of the executive committee and others made speeches, and a message from the mayor of Daegu Metropolitan City was read out. This was followed by a performance of wind instruments by an ensemble made up of two Korean exchange students and five Japanese students from Elizabeth University of Music. The same ensemble also participated in a performance with Sanyo Girls' School Junior & Senior High School wind and string instrument group.
At the Korea/Daegu Square that was set up over the three days, there was a section where people could try on traditional Korean dress chima jeogori, and other sections. It was bustling with families and young women, who experienced Korean culture there.
On the 5th, there was Korean home cooking on sale, which is popular every year. Three chefs who had been dispatched from Daegu Metropolitan City cooked and sold a menu of two items. The food had a mild flavor, differing from the well-known spicy Korean food, and visitors enjoyed the novelty of the flavors.
There were just over 4,000 visitors over the three days, making the event a huge success.

Hanover Day and German experience at Ninoshima
The German cake Baumkuchen was first introduced to Japan by a German prisoner-of-war who were on the island of Ninoshima during World War I. Because of this fact, and to commemorate one hundred years since the international friendly soccer match between the German prisoners-of-war on Ninoshima and a team of students from Hiroshima in Hiroshima City (said to be Japan's first international friendly soccer match), on June 2, 2019, the Hanover Day commemorative event and other events related to Germany were held at the Ninoshima Community Hall and surrounding area on Ninoshima Island.
As is the custom for the annual Hanover day event, there was taste-testing of German bread, sausages, and Baumkuchen, a tea ceremony section, luttje lage (a drinking contest using two glasses), a display and reading-aloud of German picture books, and a section where visitors could try making their own paper models of Hannover trains. New sections included a performance by a choir and Hiroshima Orchestra's lead cellist, soccer lessons by the Sanfrecce Hiroshima team, a Baumkuchen homemade cake-making section, a lecture on the history of Ninoshima, taste-testing of Ninoshima's local speciality, tako-meshi (octopus and rice), and more, making a very full and varied program.
There were around 650 visitors to the event. Many people came to Ninoshima and through various experiences and food at this event, spent an enjoyable day learning about the history of Ninoshima, Germany and Hannover.
