On September 14, 2021, an online training session was held for 19 young diplomats and other trainees (Fellows) participating in the United Nations Disarmament Fellowship Program sponsored by the United Nations.
　This program has been implemented by the United Nations since 1979, and this Foundation has accepted more than 900 Fellows since 1983. In 2020, the training was postponed due to the impact of the pandemic, but last year, the training was conducted jointly with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Nagasaki City in an online format. Fellows were trained by connecting Hiroshima, Nagasaki and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs online with Geneva, Switzerland, where the UN European Headquarters is located.
　In the part of the program run by Nagasaki City, participants listened to a lecture by an A-bomb survivor and took a virtual tour of Nagasaki Atomic Bomb Museum to deepen their understanding of the reality of the atomic bombing. In the section of the program run by Hiroshima City, the participants listened to a reading of A-bomb accounts and poems by volunteer readers from the Hiroshima National Peace Memorial Hall for the Atomic Bomb Victims. During the reading of A-bomb poems, some trainees were moved to tears as they recalled their own experiences.
　They said, "This training program showed us the humanitarian side of disarmament without any pretense. I believe that the knowledge and experience we gained from this training will be useful when we work on disarmament issues in the future." It was a training program that allowed participants to deepen their understanding of the reality of the atomic bombings and to share the desire of both Hiroshima and Nagasaki to abolish nuclear weapons and achieve lasting peace in the world.
