Junior High School Students'
"Communicate HIROSHIMA Project"

On August 6, a peace message in English was communicated not only to the Ambassadors of various countries to Japan, but also to overseas visitors to the Peace Memorial Park.
In Hiroshima City, in order to foster a desire and attitude toward the realization of peace, children are encouraged to not only inherit the reality of the atomic bombings, but also to communicate the information themselves.
Normally, it is difficult for students to meet the ambassadors of other countries, but this project is of great significance in peace education, as junior high school students have the opportunity to directly deliver a peace message in English to the ambassadors and other participants attending the Peace Memorial Ceremony on August 6.
This year, 36 messengers were selected from 32 junior high schools in the city. After four training sessions, including listening to lectures by hibakusha, group exercises, and exchange activities with foreign students, they participated in the event on August 6.
They were able to experience a variety of activities, as described below.

Comments from messengers

Mira Eguchi, 3rd year student, Koi Junior High School
I realized that in order to convey my thoughts to people in other countries, it is not enough to simply talk about my thoughts, but that it is important to review how the content of my message will be received by them after learning about the culture and history of the region in which they live. I realized that there were people from other prefectures and countries who did not know anything about what happened in Hiroshima, which I thought was common knowledge for everyone, and I would like to communicate about Hiroshima and peace to more people.
Fuka Shibata, 3rd year student, Tomo Junior High School
When creating my peace message, I was careful to consider not only from own standpoint, but also from many other perspectives. In the conversation with the Ambassador, we were able to discuss the fact that smiling can spread peace and that it is very important to smile. Based on this, I would like to spread peace in my daily life by smiling so that I can make those around me smile more.
Tomoya Hattanda, 3rd year student, Higashihara Junior High School
Until now, I had simply hoped for peace, but after learning the importance of peace and the horror of war during the training, I developed a strong desire for peace. For the ambassadors I spoke with, I made a conscious effort to think in their shoes and convey my feelings to them regardless of their background, gender, or race.
