Exhibition of Reproductions of Original Drawings
Manga "Town of Evening Calm"
To mark the fifteenth anniversary of the publication of the manga "Town of Evening Calm", an exhibition of Reproductions of original drawings from the manga is now open on floor B1 of the East Building of the Hiroshima Peace Memorial Museum from September 12, 2018 to the end of February, 2019.
"Town of Evening Calm" was published in the WEEKLY Action Manga magazine in September 2003. The manga's author, Fumiyo Kouno, says "I was born in and grew up in Hiroshima, but I am neither a hibakusha nor the child of a hibakusha. I do not even have any relatives who can talk about the bombing." Kouno had tried to distance herself from the bombing of Hiroshima, but she confronted the bombing and researched it in great detail. As a result, she produced a work that sensitively depicts young hibakusha who still suffered from the aftereffects ten years after the bomb was dropped. This manga was widely praised both in Japan and overseas, and has currently been translated into English, French, Spanish, Italian, Portuguese, Korean and Chinese (traditional Chinese), providing an opportunity for people all over the world to gain a greater understanding of the damage from the atomic bombing.
At the exhibition, there are 23 panel displays of detailed reproductions of the original drawings.
There is also a display booth in the Library, which was exhibiting original drawings by hibakusha Shigeo Moritomi depicting the town of Hiroshima before the bombing, titled "Vanished Neighborhood, Retracing Memories". These drawings were on display until November 26, 2018. Kouno made reference to Moritomi's fine pencil drawings as she worked on her manga, and the students visiting the museum on school excursions stared at the pictures with great interest, saying how surprised they were that the Peace Memerial Park before the bombing was such a bustling shopping district.
