Paintings of the Atomic Bombing Complete
－High school students paint pictures of the A-bomb experience－

Since 2007, with support from Hiroshima Municipal Motomachi High School, this Foundation has been involved in the creation of paintings of the atomic bombing.
The high school students work together with atomic bomb witnesses from this Foundation to create pictures of the atomic bombing that communicate the situation at the time, depicting scenes from the bombing that remain in the memories of the atomic bomb witnesses.
This time, eight witnesses and ten students completed ten paintings that had been working on since 2017.
At the completion ceremony held at Motomachi High School gallery on July 2, 2018, eight atomic bomb witnesses attended, together with the students who created the paintings and other students in the Creative Expression Course, and others from this Foundation and Motomachi High School.
A student who depicted the scene of treatment of skin rashes said
"In the year that I spent creating this picture, I felt once again the horror of the atomic bomb, from the wounds that remain even today, more than 70 years after the bombing."
Another student who painted a scene of people fleeing while picking their way among people who were on the brink of death shared her thoughts on the difficulty of creating the work in the gallery talk, saying
"I continued to search for how I should express and how I should paint scenes that I had never seen or even imagined before, scenes that make you want to turn away. I listened to the stories, and I realized that just listening was not enough－I had to put myself in a position to communicate the same thing myself. It is not just receiving the information－we have to communicate it to the next generation."
The paintings of the atomic bombing that were completed this time will be used to ensure that people have a deeper understanding of the A-bomb experience.
The paintings will also be loaned out and offered as data images, to help pass on the reality of the damage from the bombing to future generations.
