Let's Say It in English — Hiroshima Seminar
The Hiroshima Peace Memorial Museum holds the "Let's Say it in English — Hiroshima Seminar", where participants can learn about ways to communicate basic knowledge about the damage from nuclear weapons in English.
The "General Public" seminars were held on May 27 (Sun) and July 29 (Sun), 2012. There were around 130 participants in total, including people with plans to travel overseas and other members of the general public who would be taking in non-Japanese guests for homestays and the like.
The first half of each session was run by Craig Nevitt, an English teacher from the United States. After giving an overview in English of the damage caused by the atomic bomb, he then provided an explanation of how to simply answer in English questions commonly asked by non-Japanese people.
In the second half of the first session in May, Steven Leeper, the chairman of this Foundation, gave a talk on the current situation regarding nuclear weapons throughout the world, and the heightening of international pressure to conclude a nuclear weapons convention.
In the second half of the second seminar in July, Mr. Nevitt and Mr. Leeper took on the role of instructors, as participants held group discussions and made presentations on how to answer questions in English on the impact of nuclear weapons.
Approximately 140 students planning to study abroad participated in the student seminars held on May 26 (Sat), June 16 (Sat), June 21 (Thurs) and June 30 (Sat).
Participants made the following comments: "The explanations were easy to understand," "I want to convey the significance of Hiroshima overseas," and "I want to increase my knowledge of this topic from now on."
