Crime Prevention Seminar for International Students
― For a safe life in Japan―
Every spring, the Crime Prevention Seminar is held at Hiroshima City International House as part of living support activities for the international students. On April 21, 2013, an instructor was invited from Hiroshima East Police Station, and 39 international students from 12 countries, most of whom had just arrived in Japan, learned about traffic rules, ways to prevent theft and bag-snatching, and practiced self-defense tactics.
As many of the students use bicycles as a means of transport and when travelling to school, it is extremely important that they know the traffic rules. In the seminar, the students first watched a video on traffic rules. This was followed by a demonstration by the instructor of dangerous bicycle riding in rainy weather, to ensure that it would be easy for the students to understand, and an explanation of road signs. Many international students have the impression that Japan is a safe country, but the course made them aware of the importance of "looking after yourself" if something does happen.
Enthusiastic students at the seminar
In the practical session on self-defense, the students worked in pairs and tried using the self-defense tactics watching the demonstration by the instructor. While the male students proactively practiced the techniques, some of the female students were initially embarrassed. However they gradually got used to it and practiced numerous times to check their techniques.
Comments from the students included "This was very useful as I now know rules that I didn't know before", "This will help me live in Hiroshima safely", and "What they taught us will be useful in my home country as well, and I want to put it into practice".
The students had much interaction with the instructor, talking and asking questions, and the seminar was enjoyable as well as useful. In their conversations at the seminar, the students learned that the instructor practices Japanese fencing, Kendo, and decided to watch Kendo practice at Hiroshima East Police Station at a later date.
We hope that the international students use what they learned at the seminar in their day-to-day life, and have a safe and meaningful stay in Japan. Hiroshima City International House will continue to hold information-packed seminars for the safety of the international students.
