Peace Study Tour of Hiroshima-Nagasaki Peace Study Course
Hiroshima City and Nagasaki City are working to set up and spread Hiroshima-Nagasaki Peace Study Courses at universities in Japan and overseas. The aim of this activity is to systematically organize the message of the hibakusha as a common intellectual asset for humankind, and communicate it to the younger generations as a universal discipline.
For nine days from March 7, 2016, 8 international students studying at International Christian University (ICU) in Japan, which runs the course, came to Hiroshima together with 2 teachers (a total of 10 people) for a peace study tour. The participants were selected by the US-based Rotary Foundation, and are all majoring in peace-related research as part of their Master's program at ICU. This marks the 13th time that international students from ICU have visited Hiroshima as part of this activity.
This Foundation provided support for implementation of the peace study tour. The tour included visits to Peace Memorial Park and Hiroshima Peace Memorial Museum, an A-bomb testimonial by Ms. Keiko Ogura, and attendance at an A-bomb poetry recital held at Hiroshima National Peace Memorial Hall for the Atomic Bomb Victims. Through such activities, participants learned about the reality of the damage from the bombing. They also developed a broader and deeper awareness of peace, by listening to lectures by this Foundation's Chairperson Yasuyoshi Komizo and Professor Robert Jacobs of the Hiroshima Peace Institute, Hiroshima City University, as well as visiting the Hiroshima office of UNITAR (United Nations Institute for Training and Research) and others.
