A-Bomb Testimonies Translated into 22 Languages
With an increase in the number of overseas tourists visiting Hiroshima, there is also a rapid increase in overseas visitors to the Hiroshima National Peace Memorial Hall for the Atomic Bomb Victims. For this reason, a foreign language section has been established in the Library of the Memorial Hall. This is because it is thought that if people visiting from different countries can read A-bomb testimonies in their mother tongue, the content will move them and it will be possible to communicate the real damage caused by the atomic bombing.
With the aim of deepening understanding of the truth of the bombing amongst more people from overseas, in 2009 the project started with translation into 10 languages. As of the end of March 2016 testimonies were available in 22 languages. The search engine for the documents stored is available in English, Chinese and Korean in addition to Japanese, to search for openly available A-bomb testimonies. The number of testimonies available is still small, ranging from 4 to 9, but both the number of languages and number of testimonies translated will be increased
in the future.
The testimonies include descriptions of the painful thoughts of a mother who lost two daughters in the bombing, the hellish scenes witnessed by a mobilized junior high school student who narrowly escaped death, a man who suffered serious injuries and then after-effects from the bombing, a mother who, although seriously injured herself, was concerned for the safety of her children and eventually died, and others. The testimonies contain people's suffering and their wishes for peace.
