August 6, 2023, the Hiroshima Children's Peace Assembly was held at the Phoenix Hall of the International Conference Center Hiroshima. Approximately 1,200 people from all over Japan attended the Assembly, which was a joint event by children who visited Hiroshima to participate in the Peace Memorial Ceremony and children who live in Hiroshima, to express their thoughts on peace.
First, Junior and Senior High School Students Peace Club members explained the damage caused by the atomic bombings, and then Yoshiko Kajimoto, an A-bomb survivor, gave a lecture. Participants learned about the reality of the damage from the bombings.
Next, ten groups made presentations on their peace-related activities. Starting with a singing performance from Hiroshima Special Needs School, there were English guided activities by Youth Peace Volunteers, activities to eliminate bullying at Kogo Junior High School, and a presentation by Ishigaki City on their initiatives based on war experiences. All groups made wonderful presentations.
Finally, a joint message was issued to maintain peace, which is the most important wish of each of us.
Children who participated in the program commented, "The story of the hibakusha was moving," "I could recognize peace as something close and relevant to me," "I was surprised that junior high school students just like me are involved in various peace activities," and "It was good to know what children in other areas are thinking."
