The Self-Medication Tax Deduction Program has been started with the intention of promoting self-medication, which is being responsible to your own health and medicating yourself without the advice of a physician. This system allows people who buy designated over-the-counter (OTC) medicines* after January 1, 2017 to apply for a tax refund. Applicants have to meet the following conditions:
1. Applicants need to show proof that they had a vaccination shot, a cancer screening or a medical checkup including Tokutei-kenko-shinsa or Teiki-kenko-shindan.
2. Applicants need to spend more than 12,000 yen (tax-included) on the OTC medicines* per year. (The amount exceeding 12,000 yen up to 88,000 yen will be deducted from total gross income amount.)
*OTC medicines are medicines you can buy without prescriptions. Designated OTC medicines have the following logo on their packaging to show consumers which medicines are eligible for the tax break under the program.
