Bicycle Safety!

  • As a general rule, cyclists should stay on the road, not on sidewalks.
  • Stay on the left side of the road as you cycle.
  • Yield to pedestrians, cycle at a slower speed and use the path near the road.
  • Drinking and cycling, riding two-to-a-bicycle, and riding alongside your friends on the road and/or sidewalks are not allowed.
  • Turn on your bicycle light(s) at night.
  • Stop at each intersection before crossing.
  • Children must wear helmets.

Accident Insurance Plan

Depending on the severity of a bicycle accident, it’s not unheard of for the perpetrator to have to pay a large amount of reparations. In addition to dedicating yourself to safe bicycle riding, it’s best to enter into a bicycle accident insurance plan, a liability insurance plan, and/or others just in case you become involved in an accident.

Has Your Child Received School Enrollment Notification?

At the end of January, Hiroshima City sent notifications of school enrollment to parents/guardians whose children (of Japanese nationality) will enter elementary or junior high schools this April, specifying when and which schools your children will enter. Please keep this notification and submit it to the designated school on Monday, April 2. (April 2 is the registration date for enrollment, not the date of the entrance ceremony.) Please contact Kyoiku-iinkai, Gakuji Ka (Hiroshima Municipal Board of Education, School Affairs Division) at Tel. 504-2469 Fax: 504-2509, if you have not received this notification or have lost it.

Children of Foreign Nationality

If your child is not a Japanese national and you would like to have him/her enter a municipal elementary or junior high school, please contact Kyoiku-iinkai, Gakuji Ka (Municipal Board of Education, School Affairs Division: Tel. 504-2469 Fax: 504-2509). If you have already applied for school enrollment, it is not necessary to do this.

Moving
If you move within Hiroshima City and apply for a change of address by Thursday, March 15, a new school enrollment notification will be sent to your new address from the Hiroshima City Hall. If this is done on Friday, March 16 or later, the notification will not be sent to you from Hiroshima City Hall. Please therefore go to the Shimin Ka (Citizens’ Affairs Division) of your local ward office or branch office to receive the notification. If you move outside of Hiroshima City, please contact the Kyoiku-iinkai (Board of Education) with your new residential area.
Enrolling in a national, prefectural or private school
If your child is going to enter a school other than a municipal school such as a national, prefectural or private school, please submit the enrollment notification and the written consent for enrollment which was issued by the school that your child will enter to the Gakuji Ka (School Affairs Division) of the Board of Education or Shimin Ka (Citizens’ Affairs Division) of your local ward or branch office. The elementary school that is written on the notification that you received from the City Hall and the elementary school where your child is currently enrolled will also accept the above-mentioned documents.
Children with special needs
If your child needs special care, please consult the following center: Seishonen Sogo Sodan Center (Counseling Center for Youth) Main Office: Tel. 504-2197 (Address: 1-4-15 Kokutaiji-machi, Naka-ku) Branch Office: Tel. 264-0422 (Address: 2-15-55 Hikari-machi, Higashi-ku)
